March came in like a lamb and I surely hope it goes out like one too. With the melting of the winter snows and the return of the robins, it's time to dig out the rakes and give the yard a fresh grooming. It is always a wise pro-active choice to have a spinal check up before we spend 8 hours bent and twisted pulling on rakes and picking up the trash and sticks that seem to find our yard somehow. Stretching and good ergonomics of lifting and reaching such as standing in a scissors step position to rake or squatting to pick up the refuse saves a multitude of evening or next day back pain. If you find yourself hurting more than two or three days, you need an adjustment or at least a check up. Don't forget to do your warm up stretches and more importantly, the cool down stretches before and after your softball, golf or any other athletic activity. Go at a common sense speed with anything you do and you will avoid the commonplace sprain/strain or worse injuries. If you do get hurt, ice is always the best choice. When in doubt, always ice. Heat is fine if ice makes a muscle or joint hurt within the first 5 minutes of application and the hurt continues. Be smart, be proactive and have a great spring!
As always, health comes from within. Chiropractic is not about the back. Chiropractic is about Vitalism. It is about keeping the "inner physician" working as well as we can. Specific Chiropractic adjustments are designed to "remove roadblocks" of bio-mechanical stress and assist the body in balancing the nerve communication system from brain to every cell in the body. The chiropractor works with your spine because of the proximity of the spinal chord and nerve roots. The loss of normal joint translation (motion) results in altered input to the brain and the brain responds with altered muscle and chemical function. Eventually these altered functions produce symptoms. Sometimes the symptoms occur immediately such as in a lifting injury or an auto accident. Other times it takes months or even years to develop a symptom but the condition causes damage during the whole time when no symptoms were present. We all know that a person having a heart attack didn’t just develop heart disease that day and yet the heart attack may very well be the first Symptom the patient has.
If you are the type of individual that would rather be "pro-active" rather than "reactive" when it comes to your health, then you need to see a chiropractor regardless of symptoms just like you probably see a dentist once or twice a year without symptoms. You need to eat less and make it good foods that are anti-inflammatory and alkaline in digestive ash rather than acidic. Finally, you need to exercise daily.
JUST DO IT!!
A new clinical trial from the Rush University Hypertension Center in Chicago found that chiropractic upper cervical adjustment to correct the position and function of the atlas vertebra can significantly lower blood pressure inpatients with stage-1 hypertension. Techniques and protocols utilized by the national upper cervical chiropractic association were used in the study. The authors concluded that “restoration of the atlas alignment is associated with marked and sustained reductions in blood pressure similar to the use of 2-drug combination therapy.” Journal of Human Hypertension, Jan, 2007.
