The Winter Season is Here!

Winter came today. I woke to my wife telling me "we have snow"! I must admit that this first covering snow is beautiful on the trees and yards. The thought of shoveling and driving in it does not bear the same welcome in my being however. As I was shoveling this morning, I kept telling myself to bend the knees and tighten the stomach muscles for my core! Remember, when we bend and rotate, we can put up to 600 lbs of stress on the lower back lifting nothing! Now, add some snow and throw it a few feet. While snow shoveling can be considered "exercise", it can at the same time be very abusive to our spines if we do not practice proper lifting recommendations. I already covered them….bend your knees and tighten the tummy muscles no matter how light the snow may seem. It only takes one bad move and the spine will "jump up and bite" you when you least desire or expect it. The Farmer's Almanac predicts a tougher winter than last year. I hope they made a mistake this time! We need to focus on the beauty of it and try some new outdoor activity this year. Remember, less than one month and the sun starts rising up for longer daylight again! I love it!

With the upcoming Holiday Season, we all know the "goodies" will be abundant. Starting with Thanksgiving and finally ending with New Years, it is so easy to fall off the exercise and good diet wagon. It is not rocket science that many people get the flu and colds during this time of year. The answer is not the flu shot. The answer is good diet and exercise. We can literally "have our cake and eat it too" if we are going into the seasons well prepared. One may have to spend a few months getting where you need to be but it is well worth it so when all those cookies and candies and parties arrive, we are able to "go off track" for short spurts and remain in good health.

As always, health comes from within. Chiropractic is not about the back. Chiropractic is about Vitalism. It is about keeping the "inner physician" working as well as we can. Specific Chiropractic adjustments are designed to "remove roadblocks" of bio-mechanical stress and assist the body in balancing the nerve communication system from brain to every cell in the body. The chiropractor works with your spine because of the proximity of the spinal chord and nerve roots. The loss of normal joint translation (motion) results in altered input to the brain and the brain responds with altered muscle and chemical function. Eventually these altered functions produce symptoms. Sometimes the symptoms occur immediately such as in a lifting injury or an auto accident. Other times it takes months or even years to develop a symptom but the condition causes damage during the whole time when no symptoms were present. We all know that a person having a heart attack didn’t just develop heart disease that day and yet the heart attack may very well be the first Symptom the patient has.

If you are the type of individual that would rather be "pro-active" rather than "reactive" when it comes to your health, then you need to see a chiropractor regardless of symptoms just like you probably see a dentist once or twice a year without symptoms. You need to eat less and make it good foods that are anti-inflammatory and alkaline in digestive ash rather than acidic. Finally, you need to exercise daily.

JUST DO IT!!
